Teaching Assistance (TA) experience
As part of the CAS program, students participated in a week-long Teaching Assistant (TA) Experience aimed at fostering leadership, responsibility, and empathy. This initiative allowed them to step into the role of educators, assisting teachers in various classes and engaging with younger students. The purpose was to help students develop communication skills, patience, and a deeper appreciation for the work of educators while also strengthening their ability to mentor and support others.
The experience took place during school hours at the International School of Accra. It was an on-campus initiative primarily designed for IB Diploma students, with faculty members serving as mentors. Throughout the week, students assisted in lesson preparation, facilitated discussions, provided one-on-one support to younger students, and helped manage classroom activities. They also had the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, highlighting key takeaways such as teamwork, adaptability, and leadership.
Participants were required to dress in professional, school-appropriate attire to maintain a sense of authority and respect in the classroom setting. The program was fully organized within the school, with teachers acting as guiding supervisors.
Following the experience, students shared their reflections on how the role challenged them, enhanced their problem-solving skills, and deepened their understanding of the teaching profession. This initiative not only contributed to their CAS requirements but also provided valuable life skills that will benefit them in future leadership and mentorship roles.
